How can you tell which marketing channel generates real revenue?

Clicks and visits are not business outcomes. Channel value becomes visible when the source can be followed from a qualified enquiry to won business.

In short

For every enquiry, record the first known source, the source immediately before contact, qualification, proposal and outcome. A consistent shared table can support better decisions than five disconnected marketing reports.

Agree on what an outcome means

Marketing may count every enquiry, while sales values only relevant opportunities. Define the stages together.

  • Enquiry: somebody made contact
  • Qualified enquiry: the business fits the audience and has a real need
  • Sales opportunity: a decision process and next step exist
  • Proposal: a specific solution and terms were prepared
  • Won customer: a commercial agreement was reached

The smallest measurement system that works

A complex data platform is not the first requirement. Campaign links need consistent labels, source data must reach the customer record, and opportunity status must be maintained in the same or a connected system.

  • Consistent UTM tags
  • First source and last known source
  • Qualification and rejection reason
  • Proposal value or expected commercial value
  • Won or lost status and date

Do not search for one perfect source

A B2B decision may include an article, search, referral, LinkedIn post and direct return. Keep the first known touch, the source before contact and meaningful assisted influences separate.

The objective is a better investment decision, not mathematical perfection. Fix data quality before building a complicated attribution model.

Evaluate quality, not only volume

Compare qualification rate, proposal rate, win rate, average value and time to decision. A channel may generate few enquiries yet produce customers faster and at a higher rate.

What should management review weekly?

Five numbers per channel may be enough: effort, qualified enquiries, sales opportunities, won revenue and expected value of open opportunities. Add notes for data-quality problems and relevant market changes.

Do not close a channel based on one week when the decision cycle lasts months. Use a rolling period and identify opportunities that remain open, so slower but valuable B2B sources do not appear artificially weak.

Practical next step

A one-week measurement clean-up

  1. Agree on the five funnel stages
  2. Require a source field for every new enquiry
  3. Record the reason for lost opportunities
  4. Connect won value to the original record
  5. Create one shared weekly channel table
